Quilting Basics for Sewers
ZJ HumbachDescription
Quilting Basics
ZJ Humbach begins teaching the quilting basics by going over what supplies and tools you will need to get started. While there are many different quilting tools and gadgets on the market today, not all are required, and knowing what is needed vs. what is simply helpful can make purchasing your first quilting supplies easier and seem less intimidating.
ZJ first talks about what is known as a rotary cutting system. This system includes a rotary cutting mat, a rotary cutter and a ruler. There are many different sizes and types of rotary cutting mats available and ZJ explains what to look for in a good mat. She also explains what to look for in rulers and rotary cutters and shares what her favorites are.
The next of the quilting basics that she covers is the seam allowance. If you are coming from a sewing background that generally uses a ⅝” or ½” seam allowance, the ¼” seam allowance used in quilting is going to seem very small. ZJ shows a ¼” presser foot and explains how it can be useful in helping you sew with an accurate seam allowance.
After going over some of the tools needed for quilting, ZJ talks about more quilting tips and techniques. She discusses fabric, how to begin cutting fabric, and how to decide what to make as your first quilting project. ZJ shows examples of several different beginner or easy-level quilting patterns that would be great first projects.
