Capturing the Kansas whitetail deer takes careful preparation and planning. In this video, pro wildlife photographer Doug Gardner shows you all you need to know about preparing to photograph the whitetails in southwestern Kansas.
He uses a satellite map to locate the ideal habitat: a convergence of the Arkansas River, three low-ground draws, and a patch of woods. Facing into the wind to disguise his scent, Doug sets up his blind in the woods the day before the shoot. He follows deer tracks and finds the main trail, then discovers trees and ground scrapes where the bucks have left their scent.
It’s rutting season, and the photography should be exciting.
