Photographing More Wildlife

Doug Gardner
Duration:   4  mins

Alaska’s mountain valleys are home to a variety of big game animals including moose. In this video, pro wildlife photographer Doug Gardner shows you how to photograph moose feeding in the willow thickets.

As the sun rises above the peaks, he positions himself to take advantage of the side lighting. With his long telephoto lens, he shoots at 400 ISO at 1/400th. In order to hold sharp focus on the moose, he sets his aperture at f.8 and concentrates on the moose eye catchlight for his focal point. He captures multiple compositions of a bull moose and his cows during rutting season.

Besides camera settings, Doug shows you the importance of patience, waiting quietly for the animals to make their moves.
