Knitting an I-Cord Edge for Shawls or Scarves
Michele Lee BernsteinDescription
An I-Cord edging is a beautiful detail on any knitting project. In this video, knitting expert Michele Lee Bernstein demonstrates how to work an i-cord edging at the beginning and end of the row, making it the perfect technique for scarves and side-to-side shawls.
This edging requires three stitches at the beginning of the row and three stitches at the end of the row. Michele likes working the I-cord against garter stitch fabric, as it allows the edging to really pop.
For the beginning of every row the I-cord edging is worked as follows:
- Knit 1 stitch
- With yarn in front, slip 1 stitch purlwise
- Knit 1 stitch
Michele works her pattern (garter stitch) to the last three stitches and works the I-cord edging at the end of the row as follows:
- With yarn in front, slip 1 stitch purlwise
- Knit 1 stitch
- With yarn in front, slip 1 stitch purlwise
The edging is repeated at the beginning and end of every row in the same manner. Michele demonstrates several more rows by working the I-cord along both sides of her swatch.
