Description

Post stitches are interesting crochet stitches that can be used to create texture, cables, and colorwork in a project. In this video, crochet expert Mary Beth Temple explains how to work front post stitches.

There are two characteristics that define a front post stitch:

  1. 1. Stitch is done on the side of the fabric facing you (not to be confused with Right Side/Wrong Side)
  2. 2. The stitch is worked around the post (or throat) of a stitch, rather than working into the top legs of a stitch.

Mary Beth demonstrates the front post stitch by working a front post treble crochet. The method is the same for other front post stitches. The front post treble crochet (fptr) is the most dramatic and easiest to see the effects of working around the post.

To make the front post treble crochet, Mary Beth follows these steps:

  1. 1. Yarn over two times (3 loops on hook).
  2. 2. Bring hook down on the right side of the post of the stitch, work under it, and bring hook back up the left side of the stitch.
  3. 3. Yarn over and pull loop back around the stitch (4 loops on hook).
  4. 4. Yarn over, pull through two loops 3x (1 loop on hook, stitch is complete).

While working the front post stitch, Mary Beth is careful to bring the yarn overs to the fattest part of her hook. This allows the stitch to have a nice even tension and won’t be too tight. As she continues working the front post treble crochet stitches, she is working the next stitch down in the same hole she came out of on the previous stitch.
