Meet Tamara Kelly, your guide to crochet increases and decreases. Tamara begins by demonstrating how increases and decreases are used in a number of designs. Then she shows how to increase using three different, simple stitches: single, half-double and double, for both righties and lefties.
Creating shape in your crochet design is often as easy as adding a few increases. Tamara begins by showing how those increases can create a curve, then moves on to a triangle before finishing the lesson by demonstrating how to stitch a seamless yoke for a child's top-down sweater.
Increasing in the round begins with the simplest design: a flat circle. Tamara shows you how to create one with or without corners. Then she moves on to motifs and borders before breaking down an oval into its component parts, turning a potentially tricky shape into an easy one.
Just as designs can be shaped by increases, so too can they be formed by reducing the number of stitches. Tamara shows how to decrease with single, half-double and double crochets. Then she shows why decreasing may be your best bet when you already know your stitch length.
Want to decrease without leaving behind a bit of a bump or, even worse, a gap? Tamara gives you three variations on advanced decreases -- the single, double and half-double variation -- that leave less of a trace, and will make you wonder how you ever crocheted before learning about them.
Now that you've mastered the art of the increase and decrease, it's time to combine the two techniques to produce one of crochet's most popular patterns. Follow Tamara up and down "the hill" to produce single, double and sharp double chevrons.
Finish up with some special stitches! Tamara shows how the principles of increases and decreases work just as well with a post stitch and gives you a quick look at Tunisian crochet, a knitting hybrid where the same techniques can be applied.
